Riverton plays host to the travelling roadshow on the 1984 Southland floods from mid-May to mid-June.

The roadshow will be situated in the Council office, on Main Street.

After Riverton, the roadshow moves to Te Anau.

Riversdale is hosting its 36th Mixed Media Exhibition, which opens on Saturday 18 July.

The exhibition is at the Riversdale Community Centre and is open daily from 11am until 5pm, with a late night on Wednesday 22 July until 7pm. The exhibition closes at 4pm on Sunday 26 July.

Entry price is $5 for adults, $1 for high school students and 50c for primary school children. A season ticket is $6.

More than 80 artists from throughout New Zealand will be exhibiting more than 500 works.

Stewart Island is holding its annual Singles Ball on Saturday, 22 August.

Hosted at the Stewart Island Community Centre, the night will feature two bands, a seafood supper and the appearance of a special guest.

Kakapo Encounter 2009 - Meet Sirocco

The Ulva Island Charitable Trust wishes to extend an invitation out to educate people first-hand about New Zealand's very special nocturnal parrot, the Kakapo. Being the world's rarest parrot, with a population of only 125, don't miss the opportunity to meet the very personable and wonderful, Sirocco.

The Ulva Island Trust is offering nightly departures from Stewart Island from the 26th of September to the 26th of October, where small groups will be guided to Sirocco's enclosure to observe the male parrot at close quarters.

All proceeds of the event go towards Ulva Island projects, including trail maintenance and the reintroduction and care of endangered bird and plant species. Ulva Island has been predator-free now for over a decade and varieties of native New Zealand birds thrive here.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Southland marathon, the first full length (42.195km) marathon in New Zealand and the Southern Hemisphere.

To celebrate the 100 years there will be incentive prizes totalling $24,000 thanks to the Invercargill Licensing Trust.

Starting in Riverton, the course will traverse through Southland farming country until it reaches it final destination at the Surrey Park track in Invercargill.

The programme, which is touring aroung Southland, will be offering activities such as puppet making, singing, stilt walking and so much more.

The programme is all about kids having a go, getting creative, trying new activities and just having some good old fashioned fun.

A brand new mountain bike is up for grabs at the White Hill Windfarm Classic Bike Ride and Run this year. The event also gives people the chance to look inside an operational turbine with guided walks available by Meridian Energy.

There are five different events on the day including the full bike course (25km), the recreational ride (17km), the 13km cross country ride, the junior bike ride or run (4 or 8km) and a 5km return walk.

This year the Mossburn Preschool and the Northern Southland Medical Trust have been chosen to benefit from the day's proceeds.

New Zealands oldest Vintage Club will be 55 years of age in 2011. To celebrate this milestone there will be a 'working weekend' at Thornbury on 19th and 20th of March 2011. Activities will include a vintage ploughing match, threshing mill and chaff cutter operating, along with other demonstrations.
Craft stalls will also be there. Food, a bar and a meal on Saturday night will be available on site on a user pays basis. Space for camping provided.

Routeburn Classic

The Routeburn Classic is an adventure run over New Zealand's world famous Routeburn Track. Staged in late April/early May annually it is an exclusive event and limited to 350 lucky athletes.

The track is 32 kilometres long and climbs to 1127 meters above sea level. Set in a New Zealand National Park and a World Heritage Area in Fiordland encompassing changing terrain from lush native bush to an exposed alpine environment. The descent back to native forest follows rivers and waterfalls to the finish line. In sections it appears the track has been cut by nature rather than by man. There are some aggressive up-hill climbs and a challenging technical down-hill. The track for the most part is technical in nature with rocks and tree roots all a part of the challenge.

The ILT Kidzone Festival is back - bigger and better than ever before! Over the course of the five day festival from the 20th to the 25th July, children will get to enjoy a variety of fun-filled activities, thanks to the continued support of funders and volunteers from the community.

Whether it's trying a new sport or putting creative skills to the test, there's no better way for kids to spend school the holidays than participating in the action-packed workshops and getting involved in the games and shows that are scheduled from 10.30am to 3.30pm daily.

Admission is $13 per person, per day and you can purchase your tickets from the Invercargill i-SITE Information Centre at the Southland Museum and Art Gallery, Gala Street, Invercargill or from the Southland District Council area offices. Children must be accompanied by an adult or caregiver over the age of 14 at the festival.
