Group Manager Services and Assets

Reporting to the CEO

Operating expenditure $60 million

Taking your career places

Speak to anyone in local government who has worked here and they'll tell you the breadth of this role is enormous - far more than you'd experience elsewhere. It's a role that will literally take you and your career places. It's a pivotal role and if you've hit a glass ceiling we encourage you to explore it.

The District Council is responsible for more than 30,979 square kilometres of land, with a resident population of approximately 30,000. Council is responsible for the delivery of anything from water, wastewater, stormwater, roading and bridges to environmental health, animal control, libraries and other community infrastructure, assets and services. A geographically diverse region, it has NZ's largest roading network - vital to our far flung resident population and expanding tourist base. We service innumerable rural communities, necessitating frequent travel and extensive engagement with Community Boards in these areas. It is a Council unique in many respects, both professional and personal.

Reporting to the CEO, your role will be to provide strategic direction, manage, plan and develop Council's infrastructure assets and services with a significant focus on roading and the future funding of such. It's a role that works in close unison with engineers and one that necessitates relationships at all levels and across a diversity of Council and community groups, government departments and professional bodies. Commercially astute and with strong negotiating and leadership capabilities, you'll be capable of navigating what can be a challenging but equally rewarding political environment. A background encompassing engineering and management, coupled with relevant tertiary and professional qualifications, is desirable as is an appreciation of local government. That said, we're not averse to new blood and new ideas if the experience is relevant and the person right.

You are welcome to contact Henry Pipkin, Human Resources Manager, on 03 211 2512 or email him at henry.pipkin@southlanddc.govt.nz Applications can be forwarded to PO Box 903 Invercargill 9840 and close Friday, July 30th 2010.
